Will You Get Amazing Shots With Expensive Photography Gear?

Its a common misperception in photography that the more expensive the gear you have, the better the results you’ll achieve – nothing could be further from the truth…

All I seem to have seen lately on social media are expensive shiny cameras coupled with high-end lenses that really do look the dog’s dangly bits, but here’s the [light-hearted] truth; your photographic skills don’t, won’t and never will rely solely upon how much of that hard earned cash you’ve shelled out on you’re photography gear.

Breath-taking Shots

Let’s face it, I’ll guarantee if you scroll a few minutes on Facebook or Instagram you’ll stumble across some bizarre anecdote about some amateur photographer capturing a breath-taking shot armed with only good luck and a good old smartphone. Meanwhile, some box-ticking ‘pros’ with top-of-the-line equipment fail to spark even a hint of interest or creativity. Why is that? Well, it’s simple: gear doesn’t take the shot – we [you] do!

Understand Your Gear – Love Your Gear

There can be no doubt that being in proud possession of an expensive mirrorless Leica, Hasselblad, Sony, Canon or Nikon will enhance your photography experience, but knowing how to work with what you have is way more important. You’d be surprised what you can achieve with mid price ranged cameras and a keen eye for ‘composition’. There’s a lot to be said for mastering the basics including
shutter speed, aperture, ISO and storytelling rather than obsessing over the best gear money can buy.

Creativity is Priceless

Any photographer worth his or her salt will think outside the box, often finding the bizarre and beauty in the most everyday locations. It’s this creativity and unique vision that turns an ordinary or mundane scene into something rather special and pleasing on the viewer’s eye. Don’t be afraid to grab that entry-level camera with both hands and get creative. More often than not, quirky angles, and unexpected subjects yield the most interesting results.

Learn Before You Spend

While investing in expensive photography gear isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s worth considering investing in education and/or experience first. There are plenty workshops and online courses that will greatly enhance those newly acquired skills but remember practice is the only way to elevate them to the heights you aspire to. Plus, as you go, you’ll soon develop a more informed and detailed perspective on what gear will benefit ‘your style’ prior to spending any money.

The Bottom Line

When push comes to shove, the gear you actually use certainly is not the end-all-be-all of photography. It’s your passion, your unique perspective, and above all your willingness to learn that will improve your skills and work. So, whether strutting around with two gorgeous mirrorless cameras or just an old point-and-shoot, remember this: focus on your skills, let your creativity flow, and enjoy the journey.

Every artist has their own vision and personality so let your individuality shine through. Remember, great shots come from great shooters, and that’s what makes them so interesting and priceless.
