The historic landmark is now on the National Heritage List for England and was restored by South Tyneside Council back in 1991/2, including restoration of the sails, which also won the coveted Civic Trust Award.

In its earliest from the Whitburn Mill would have been used to ground corn from neighbouring farms to make bread.

Located on the north east coast in Whitburn, its walls are made of solid stone from the nearby Marsden quarry. It also has a distinguishable conical tower and a timber cap with sails and a fantail.
