The Herd Groyne was built by the Newcastle Trinity House Board back in 1882 and still has its original and working ‘fog bell’.
The 15 meter iron lighthouse remains an important navigational aid to ships venturing into, and out of, the River Tyne.
Sitting proudly on the former Herd sands which was the original name given to beach we all call the Littlehaven, the Herd Groyne is popular attraction for many visitors to the north east.
Sadly, the lighthouse was badly damaged by the now infamous ‘Storm Babet’ in October 2023, leaving the hexagonal landmark in a perilous state. Thankfully, the historic lighthouse was given a £250,000 restoration and reopened on 17 June.
