The Stadium of Light was built in the mid 1990s as a replacement for Sunderland’s old Roker Park. The vibrant old ground had little if any space for expansion, hence, the modern and larger, Stadium of Light was built 500 metres away with a capacity of 42,000 seats.
The stadium officially opened on the 31st of July with a friendly match between Sunderland and Ajax (0-0).
The north east football arena was further expanded in 2002 to a capacity of 49,000 seats with an innovative design that would allow for any potential future expansion to a maximum capacity of 66,000 seats, although no plans for such expansion exist at the moment.
While purely built for footballing reasons, the Stadium of Light is also the perfect host for major attractions including Ed Sheeran among others in the close season…
