St Peter’s Church is one of the UK’s earliest stone churches and was built on land given by King Ecgfrith of Northumbria in AD 674…
Founded by St Benedict Biscop, St Peter’s Church still retains many of its original sections, including the West Wall, porch and stone carvings.
St Peter’s was also once home to Venerable Bede, one of the city’s famous scholars who composed the output of his many works there.
Nestled on the riverside, St Peter’s is a popular visitor attraction and features a craft shop, displays, and a coffee shop. There is also a working church allotment garden and fascinating bee hives.
Following an enhancement process by Sunderland Council in 2016-2017, 12 Staines glass windows in the café and church grounds were designed and made by artists Rachel Welford and Adrian Riley. They feature written quotes from the bible and visual representations of the changing seasons.
