Newby Hall is well known for it’s vast beautiful gardens surrounded by the River Ure but the stunning Georgian family home has more to offer than you might think…
On arrival, you’d be forgiven for thinking the glorious family home of Mr & Mrs Richard Compton is just a rather splendid gardening playground for those who pride themselves in knowing a thing or two about herbaceous borders and flowering perennials. Not so, this is a place where the young and the elderly can explore till their hearts and minds are content.
The House
The Georgian house was built way back in the 1690s in the style of Sir Christopher Wren but was subsequently expanded by John Carr and Robert Adam. Its incredible contents were assembled by Weddell, who was a direct ancestor of the Compton family and include a rare set of Gobelin Tapestries, a gallery of classical statuary and some of Chippendale’s best furniture.
Newby Hall Gardens
The award winning 25 acre gardens were created in the early 1920s but have changed beyond recognition over the years with Herbaceous Borders, Sylvia’s Garden, Autumn Garden, National Cornus Collection, Rose Garden, Water Garden, East Rock Garden, Robin’s Walk, White Garden, Woodland Garden, Rock Garden, Tropical Garden, Beacon Garden, Curving Pergola and Orchard Garden all playing their part in making this an incredible place to visit.
Things To Do
We promised you there was more than just gardens and, as you can see in the video, the list almost endless…
Boat Trips: We took a relaxing 20 minute boat trip along the beautiful River Ure which meant seeing those amazing sights from a different angle. There’s also a chance to spot the odd Otter or sneaky Kingfisher lurking on the banks of the Ure.
The Miniature Railway: This is a must do – the 10 1/4″ gauge Miniature Railway runs along the River Ure and operates on a steel track in conjunction with an electric powered loco, offering those onboard the opportunity to explore the sites of Newby Hall with a touch of nostalgia.
The Bear House: What? Yes, an amazing Teddy Bear Collection from Gyles Brandreth’s within the gardens at Newby Hall.
Dollshouse Exhibition: If you’re a fan of perfect detail and craftsmanship you’ll be pleased to learn that Newby Hall is now the permanent home to one of the finest collections of dollshouses and miniatures in the world, thanks to the generosity of collectors Caroline Hamilton and Jane Fiddick.
There’s also a shop, restaurant, adventure park and sculpture park to explore while on your travels around this amazing place.
Centrally located between London and Edinburgh, Newby Hall and Gardens is just a stones throw from the A1M, and easily accessible from Leeds, York and Harrogate.
