Miners Lamp – Repaired And Shot With A Nifty Fifty

I recently refurbished an old and original Eccles miners lamp and the results proved not only satisfying but also extremely photogenic…

The lamp in question was my late father’s and, [as far I knew], had not been lit for at least 40 long years. Being a keen photographer and always looking for a challenge, I decided to give the old lamp a strip and refurb which took slightly longer than I first anticipated; 3 month later to be exact.

Natural Light

As we all know, photographers are always on the prowl for a ‘naturally lit’ shot without any colour cast. Strong light can cause glare and even over-exposure. Too dim, and the shots can often appear slightly grained and even discoloured.

The miners lamp burns on a paraffin based fuel, allowing the flame to produce a soft and quite warm glow which provides rather nice lighting for taking photographs.

While it’s all subjective, I’m hoping you’ll appreciate the look and feel of this Christmassy shot…
